Omar Abdullah Reviews Key Departments Ahead of J&K's 2026-27 Budget

Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Tuesday initiated pre-budget consultations with key government departments ahead of the 2026-27 budget session of the Legislative Assembly. The meetings aimed to review departmental priorities, assess public needs, and align proposals with the state’s overall development objectives.

Highlighting people-centric initiatives, Abdullah stressed the need for efficient service delivery and inclusive growth to ensure balanced development across all regions. The Chief Minister, who also holds the Finance portfolio, called for proposals that address the pressing needs of citizens while promoting sustainable development.

Departments involved in the consultations included Power Development, Housing and Urban Development, Finance, Revenue, General Administration, Law, Justice & Parliamentary Affairs, Tourism, and Information Technology. Senior officials, including the Chief Secretary, Additional Chief Secretaries, and Administrative Secretaries of various departments, participated in detailed deliberations.

Abdullah’s consultative process is scheduled to continue through January 21 and 22, covering another 15 key departments. The Chief Minister is expected to present the state budget for 2026-27 in the Legislative Assembly on February 6, marking his second budget since returning to power in 2024.

The budget is being closely watched by government employees, business communities, and citizens, particularly regarding unfulfilled electoral promises such as 200 units of free electricity for poor families. Abdullah’s leadership and Finance Department oversight are expected to shape proposals that balance fiscal prudence with social welfare initiatives.

Observers noted that Abdullah’s focus on people-oriented and regionally balanced planning reflects an effort to address both development gaps and public expectations ahead of the upcoming budget session, signaling a comprehensive approach to governance in J&K.
