Omar Abdullah Demands CCE Postponement as LG Delays Age Relief

CM intervenes amid flight chaos and pending age-relaxation approval.

Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Saturday made an urgent public appeal to the Jammu and Kashmir Public Service Commission (JKPSC) to postpone the Combined Competitive Examination (CCE) scheduled for Sunday, citing acute uncertainty caused by the Lieutenant Governor’s office delaying approval for upper-age-limit relaxation traditionally extended to aspirants.

In a strongly worded statement issued through his office on X, the Chief Minister highlighted the “unprecedented stress” being experienced by thousands of candidates, exacerbated by two simultaneous crises: the continuing nationwide flight cancellation turmoil that has stranded outstation candidates, and the lingering indecision over age relaxation that could disqualify a significant number of otherwise eligible applicants.

Advisor to the Chief Minister, Nasir Aslam Wani, confirmed that the elected government had forwarded the age-relaxation file to Lok Bhavan earlier this week, only for it to be returned by Raj Bhavan with queries that were subsequently sent to the JKPSC for its views. Wani stressed that until the Lieutenant Governor grants formal approval, holding the examination would amount to denying thousands of aspirants a level playing field.

The demand for postponement has rapidly gained political momentum, with PDP president Mehbooba Mufti publicly urging both the Chief Minister and the Lieutenant Governor to intervene immediately, describing candidates braving freezing temperatures on the streets as victims of an institutional tussle. Senior CPI(M) leader and Kulgam MLA M Y Tarigami echoed the sentiment, warning that conducting the test while a critical eligibility decision remains pending would place aspirants at an irreparable disadvantage.

As the clock ticks toward the preliminary examination on Sunday, the JKPSC now faces mounting pressure from the elected government, opposition parties, and thousands of anxious candidates to defer the process until age-relaxation approval is secured and travel disruptions subside, ensuring fairness and equal opportunity for all participants in one of the Union Territory’s most crucial recruitment exercises.
