Oil Pipeline Cooperation Discussed As India, Sri Lanka Leaders Hold Key Meeting

India and Sri Lanka discuss oil pipeline to strengthen bilateral energy cooperation.

India and Sri Lanka have discussed the possibility of strengthening energy cooperation, including a proposed oil pipeline project, during high-level talks between Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan and Anura Kumara Dissanayake, signalling renewed focus on regional energy connectivity.

The discussions centred on enhancing bilateral collaboration in the petroleum sector, with both sides exploring the feasibility of establishing a cross-border oil pipeline. The proposed project is aimed at ensuring a stable and cost-effective supply of fuel while reducing logistical challenges associated with traditional shipping methods.

Officials indicated that the initiative aligns with broader efforts to deepen economic ties and improve infrastructure linkages between the two neighbouring countries. Energy cooperation has emerged as a key pillar of India-Sri Lanka relations, particularly in the wake of Colombo’s recent economic challenges and its push for long-term energy security.

The talks also covered ongoing joint ventures and investments in Sri Lanka’s energy sector, including Indian participation in fuel storage and distribution infrastructure. Both countries have been working to expand collaboration in renewable energy and petroleum logistics as part of a diversified energy strategy.

Sri Lanka views India as a critical partner in stabilising its energy supplies, while New Delhi has emphasized the importance of regional integration and strategic cooperation in the Indian Ocean region. The proposed pipeline, if implemented, could significantly enhance efficiency and resilience in fuel distribution across the island nation.

While no formal agreement has been announced, both sides expressed optimism about advancing discussions in the coming months. The outcome of these talks is expected to shape future cooperation in the energy sector and strengthen bilateral ties between India and Sri Lanka.
