Odisha’s Metro: New Plan with Centre’s Backing
Odisha launches a fresh metro rail plan for Bhubaneswar with Centre’s support.
The Odisha government has announced the formation of a technical committee to spearhead a revamped metro rail project for Bhubaneswar, signaling a fresh approach to urban transportation. Housing and Urban Development Minister Krushna Chandra Mahapatra revealed that the previous metro plan, developed by the BJD government, has been entirely discarded, and a new detailed project report (DPR) will be crafted with support from the Government of India.
The technical committee, comprising department secretaries, officers, and experts, will conduct field visits to cities with operational metro systems to design the metro route, parking facilities, and other infrastructure. “The committee will ensure a comprehensive plan tailored to Bhubaneswar’s needs,” Mahapatra told reporters. The initiative aims to create an efficient rapid rail transportation system, replacing the earlier 26-km proposal connecting Biju Patnaik International Airport to Trisulia in Cuttack, which was estimated at Rs 6,225 crore and had begun preliminary groundwork.
By seeking Central government collaboration, Odisha aims to leverage national expertise and funding to execute the project. This strategic move underscores the state’s commitment to modernizing urban mobility and fostering sustainable development in its capital region.
