Odisha Student’s Death Prompts BJD’s 12-Hour Strike
BJD protests nursing student’s death with Raighar hartal.
The Biju Janata Dal (BJD) has called for a 12-hour bandh in Raighar block, Nabarangpur district, Odisha, on August 11, 2025, to protest the death of a second-year BSc nursing student, who allegedly took her life after harassment. The hartal, announced on August 10, will run from 6 AM to 6 PM, with essential services exempted, according to a BJD statement. The party demands Rs 1 crore in compensation for the student’s family.
The student consumed pesticides on July 17, 2025, following alleged harassment by Satyajit Sarkar, who reportedly assaulted her on July 13. A case was registered at Jeypore Police Station in Koraput district, said former Nabarangpur MP Pradeep Majhi, who criticized the police for failing to act promptly against the accused. However, police confirmed that Satyajit and another individual have been arrested in connection with the case.
The BJD’s strike highlights growing outrage over the incident, emphasizing demands for justice and accountability in the tragic death of the young student.
