Odia Poet and BJP Leader Sankarshan Parida Passes Away at 68

Veteran Odia poet and BJP stalwart succumbs to lung cancer battle.

Renowned Odia poet and veteran Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Sankarshan Parida passed away on October 30, 2025, succumbing to complications from advanced lung cancer during treatment at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in Bhubaneswar. Admitted to Capital Hospital earlier when his condition deteriorated critically, Parida had previously undergone specialized oncology care in Mumbai, reflecting a protracted struggle against the disease that had progressively weakened his health over several months. His demise marks the end of a multifaceted career that intertwined literary excellence with dedicated public service, leaving an indelible mark on Odisha's cultural and political spheres.

Parida's public journey spanned decades of grassroots leadership, culminating in pivotal roles such as President of the Puri Zilla Parishad, Chairman of the Puri Sadar Panchayat Samiti, and President of the BJP's State Panchayati Raj Cell. Beyond politics, he spearheaded socio-economic initiatives, including the establishment of junior and degree colleges in Puri Sadar Block, and served as Chairman of the Odisha State Handicrafts Corporation, where he innovated by developing the traditional Rath Rope for cultural festivals. As a committed social worker, Parida championed Odia language governance through advocacy movements that led to the formation of a dedicated cabinet sub-committee, while his literary oeuvre—infused with social consciousness and cultural ethos—earned acclaim across Odisha, blending poetic eloquence with activist fervor.

The news of Parida's passing elicited an outpouring of grief from literary luminaries, political figures, and citizens statewide, underscoring his broad influence. Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi expressed profound sorrow in an official statement, describing the loss as "an irreparable void in Odisha's political landscape and literary heritage," and highlighted Parida's unwavering commitment to public welfare. Tributes also flowed from State BJP President Manmohan Samal, Puri MP Sambit Patra, senior leaders like Samir Mohanty and Surath Biswal, as well as former MLA Lalitendu Bidyadhar Mohapatra, who collectively lauded his integrity, eloquence, and bridge-building between art and administration.

In a solemn ritual of farewell, Parida's mortal remains were transported to the BJP state headquarters in Bhubaneswar, where party functionaries, colleagues, and admirers gathered to pay homage. The assembly, marked by silent prayers and shared reminiscences of his contributions, reflected the deep personal bonds he forged across ideological divides. Parida is survived by his wife and two daughters, who received condolences from dignitaries emphasizing his legacy of resilience and service.

Parida's departure, amid financial challenges that occasionally impeded his medical care, prompts reflection on the intersection of public service and personal fortitude in Odisha's evolving political narrative. His poetry, often rooted in themes of equity and cultural preservation, continues to inspire emerging writers, while his political tenure exemplifies non-partisan dedication to local development. As the state observes a period of mourning, discussions have surfaced regarding posthumous recognitions to honor his dual eminence in letters and leadership.
