Nostalgic Joyride: Delhi CM Rekha Gupta Revives U-Special Buses with a Song!

Rekha Gupta relaunches iconic student buses, singing with DU students en route to her college.

Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta re-launched the U-Special bus service, a cherished lifeline for Delhi University students, with a nostalgic journey to her alma mater, Daulat Ram College, where she earned her commerce degree and served as DUSU president. Boarding a bus from the Delhi University Sports Complex, Gupta joined students in singing patriotic songs like Ae Watan Watan Mere Aabad Rahe Tu, accompanied by guitars and congas, evoking memories of her college days.

The service, relaunched with 25 electric buses covering 67 DU colleges across 25 routes, aims to provide safe, student-friendly transport, equipped with air conditioning, music systems, and cameras for enhanced comfort and security.

The U-Special service, originally introduced in 1971 but discontinued during the 2020 COVID-19 lockdown, was celebrated by Gupta as the “lifeline of university life,” carrying students’ laughter, chatter, and dreams. Reflecting on her student years, she shared vivid memories of riding on bus steps to catch the breeze, singing with friends, and forging bonds that shaped her path to public service.

“Daulat Ram is much more than walls and classrooms for me. It gave direction to my dreams,” she said, crediting her alma mater for her political journey. At the inauguration, joined by DU Vice-Chancellor Yogesh Singh and Transport Minister Pankaj Singh, Gupta recounted leading movements for more buses as DUSU president, expressing pride in fulfilling that vision as CM.

The re-launched U-Special buses promise to revive the joyous camaraderie of student life while ensuring punctual, secure travel exclusively for students. Gupta’s emotional address highlighted the service’s role in creating unforgettable moments, contrasting past antakshari games with modern music systems.

As Delhi University students embrace this revitalized transport option, the initiative reflects Gupta’s commitment to enhancing educational infrastructure and reconnecting with the vibrant spirit of her college days, fostering a sense of community and nostalgia.
