Norway Crown Princess Mette-Marit Placed On Lung Transplant Waiting List
Crown Princess Mette-Marit placed on lung transplant waiting list.
Norway’s Crown Princess Mette-Marit has been placed on the waiting list for a lung transplant after a significant deterioration in her health, according to medical officials and a statement from the Royal Palace. The 52-year-old princess has been living with a rare form of pulmonary fibrosis since 2018, a chronic and incurable condition that causes progressive scarring of the lungs and increasing breathing difficulties.
Medical specialists at Oslo University Hospital Rikshospitalet said her condition has worsened notably over the past six months. Lung specialist Are Holm told a press briefing that scans and tests showed a marked increase in scar tissue in her lungs, along with a sharp decline in lung function over recent months. He described the condition as serious, noting that pulmonary fibrosis severely restricts oxygen transfer into the bloodstream.
Doctors explained that being placed on a transplant waiting list indicates a critical stage of illness, typically reserved for patients who may have limited time without surgery but are still strong enough to endure a major operation. However, they also stressed that organ matching is complex, depending on donor availability, blood type compatibility and medical urgency, meaning there is no certainty about when or whether a transplant will take place.

The Royal Palace confirmed that the Crown Princess will be unable to carry out official duties while she awaits treatment. The announcement also noted that her health situation will affect the schedules and responsibilities of Crown Prince Haakon and other members of the royal family. Several upcoming royal engagements, including anniversary-related events, have already been postponed or cancelled due to her condition.
In recent months, Princess Mette-Marit has appeared in public with supplemental oxygen support, reflecting the seriousness of her respiratory difficulties. The palace had earlier indicated in December that a transplant might become necessary as her condition progressed, and her current placement on the waiting list marks a formal escalation of her treatment path.
The development comes during a challenging period for the Norwegian royal family, as Crown Prince Haakon recently cut short an overseas visit to remain by her side, and their daughter Princess Ingrid Alexandra temporarily returned from studies abroad to be with her mother. As the family focuses on her care, medical teams continue to monitor her condition closely while awaiting suitable donor availability.
