No Politics! Congress Urges Flood Relief Allocation

Congress urges Centre for urgent flood relief funds.

The Congress party has issued a powerful call to action, urging the Central government to immediately release additional funds to support states ravaged by devastating floods across North India. Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge emphasized that there should be “no politicking” in the face of natural disasters, demanding a dedicated financial package for Himachal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir, Punjab, Uttarakhand, and Haryana to aid recovery and rehabilitation efforts.

Kharge highlighted the dire situation in Punjab, where torrential rains have left over 2.5 lakh people grappling with the aftermath of catastrophic flooding. The floods have claimed several lives, disrupted normalcy, and prompted the closure of schools and colleges across the state. In Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand, landslides triggered by heavy rainfall have resulted in at least seven deaths, while Jammu and Kashmir faces ongoing challenges, with the pilgrimage to the Mata Vaishno Devi shrine suspended for the seventh consecutive day following a deadly landslide that killed 34 people last week.

“My heartfelt condolences to the families who have suffered losses,” Kharge said in a statement on X. “I have spoken to senior Congress leaders in Punjab, and the Congress party is committed to providing all possible assistance and support to those affected.” He stressed the need for both the Central and state governments to step up efforts, ensuring immediate relief, comprehensive rehabilitation, and accessible medical assistance for flood victims.

Kharge called for a robust response from the Centre, urging the release of additional funds to address the crisis in the affected states. He specifically demanded a tailored financial package to meet the unique needs of Himachal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir, Punjab, Uttarakhand, and Haryana, where infrastructure damage, loss of life, and economic disruptions have been severe. “The PM CARES fund must be utilized to ensure adequate compensation for distressed communities in all flood-affected regions,” he added, emphasizing that political differences should not hinder relief efforts.

The Congress leader’s remarks come amid growing public frustration over the pace of relief operations in flood-hit areas. Punjab, in particular, has been battered by another spell of heavy rain, exacerbating the challenges faced by residents and local authorities. The suspension of the Mata Vaishno Devi pilgrimage in Jammu and Kashmir has also sparked concerns about the region’s economic and cultural recovery.

As North India reels from the impacts of these natural disasters, the Congress party’s demand for swift and substantial Central assistance underscores the urgency of unified action. Kharge’s call to prioritize human welfare over political agendas resonates as a plea for solidarity, urging all stakeholders to work together to rebuild lives and restore hope in the affected regions.
