Nitin Gadkari Advocates 100% Ethanol Blending To Reduce Fuel Imports

Gadkari pushes 100% ethanol blending to cut oil imports.

India’s push toward cleaner fuels has taken a significant turn, with Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari strongly advocating for a rapid shift toward 100% ethanol blending in petrol, a move he says could redefine the country’s energy security strategy amid global uncertainties.

Addressing a recent industry event, Gadkari said India should aspire to achieve full ethanol-based fuel usage in the near future, arguing that rising geopolitical tensions—particularly in West Asia—have exposed the risks of overdependence on imported crude oil. He stressed that energy self-reliance is now a strategic necessity rather than an option.

At present, India has already achieved a major milestone in its ethanol programme, with E20 fuel (20% ethanol-blended petrol) rolled out nationwide ahead of schedule. The government has been steadily increasing blending levels over the past decade as part of its broader biofuel strategy aimed at reducing import bills and emissions.

Gadkari highlighted that a transition to higher ethanol blends, and eventually 100% ethanol fuel, could significantly reduce India’s vulnerability to global oil price shocks. He also pointed to the potential benefits for the rural economy, noting that ethanol production supports farmers through increased demand for crops such as sugarcane and maize.

The minister further argued that ethanol adoption aligns with India’s long-term environmental goals, helping reduce vehicular emissions and promote cleaner mobility solutions. However, the transition also raises technical and infrastructural challenges, including engine compatibility and fuel distribution upgrades, which would require coordinated policy and industry support.

With discussions around higher blending ratios gaining momentum, the proposal is expected to trigger further debate among automakers, fuel experts, and policymakers as India balances energy security ambitions with practical implementation concerns in the transport sector.
