Nirmala Sitharaman Advises Interns To Avoid Mistakes With Serious Consequences

Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Friday interacted with interns under the Prime Minister's Internship Scheme (PMIS) in New Delhi and urged them to approach their responsibilities with care, precision and an awareness of how their work can affect others. She stressed that even a seemingly minor workplace error could have serious consequences for a customer, user or another person further down the line.

Sitharaman illustrated her point using the example of motorcycle manufacturing, where a small mistake while producing a component could eventually affect the person purchasing the vehicle. Such an error, she explained, could potentially create safety concerns or force the customer to spend money on repeated repairs. She emphasised that employees should therefore understand the consequences of their work rather than focusing only on completing an assigned task.

The Finance Minister extended the message to sectors such as banking and digital services. She pointed to the consequences of an incorrect financial transaction, giving the example of mistakenly transferring Rs 1,00,000 instead of Rs 1,000. She also referred to errors involving people's names, accounts and other digital information, noting that inaccurate records can create problems for individuals who may have no role in causing the mistake.

Sitharaman urged the interns to keep the end user in mind while carrying out their responsibilities. She stressed that the person making an error may not ultimately face its consequences, while an innocent customer or user could be left to deal with the resulting problems. She said this principle should remain relevant across professions, whether an individual works in manufacturing, banking, technology or another sector.

Following the interaction, Sitharaman wrote on Facebook that the interns had come from different parts of India and represented diverse sectors. She noted that they were gaining industry exposure and developing skills relevant to the workplace. She also stressed that the lesson about accuracy and responsibility was not limited to one particular task, but was applicable wherever people work and make decisions that can affect others.

The Prime Minister's Internship Scheme aims to provide young people with practical experience through internship opportunities in India's top 500 companies. The programme is designed to help bridge the gap between academic education and workplace requirements by offering hands-on industry exposure, relevant skills and greater job readiness. Sitharaman's interaction focused on the importance of using that experience to develop not only professional skills but also a strong sense of responsibility toward those affected by one's work.
