NHRC Issues Notices to Uttarakhand Officials Over Death of Tripura Student
NHRC demands urgent probe into Tripura student's brutal racial killing.
The National Human Rights Commission has taken serious cognisance of the alleged racially motivated murder of 24-year-old Anjel Chakma from Tripura, promptly issuing notices to the Dehradun District Magistrate and Senior Superintendent of Police while requiring a thorough investigation into the incident and submission of a comprehensive action taken report within a strict seven-day timeframe.
In its directives, the Commission has mandated that complete copies of all ongoing case proceedings be forwarded to the Uttarakhand Chief Secretary and Director General of Police, alongside explicit instructions for authorities to implement robust statewide measures ensuring the security and protection of students hailing from the North Eastern region against any form of discrimination or threat.
Anjel Chakma, pursuing his final-year MBA at a private university in Dehradun, tragically died on December 26 after enduring 17 days in hospital following a savage assault on December 9, during which attackers allegedly wielded knives and blunt instruments in response to racial provocations.

According to the grieving father—a serving Border Security Force jawan currently posted in Manipur—the perpetrators hurled derogatory slurs such as "Chinese momo" at his sons, escalating into a violent attack when Anjel courageously intervened to defend his brother and firmly asserted their Indian citizenship.
Acting under Section 12 of the Protection of Human Rights Act, 1993, the NHRC bench led by member Priyank Kanoongo viewed the complaint as indicating prima facie grave violations of fundamental rights to life, dignity, and equality, amid widespread national condemnation highlighting entrenched prejudice against North Eastern individuals and urgent demands for systemic reforms to eradicate such hate-driven crimes.
