NHAI and Reliance Jio Launch Mobile Safety Alert System to Protect National Highway Travelers

New phone-based alert system will warn commuters of hazards ahead using Jio’s 4G and 5G networks.

The National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Reliance Jio to deploy a telecom-based safety alert system across India’s national highways. This innovative system will leverage Jio’s extensive 4G and 5G network to provide travelers with advance warnings on their mobile devices as they approach accident-prone areas, fog zones, stray-cattle regions, or emergency diversions.

Designed to enhance road safety, the system will send timely alerts via SMS, WhatsApp, and high-priority calls to help drivers adjust their speed and driving behavior well before reaching hazardous locations. The solution is integrated with existing NHAI digital platforms such as the ‘Rajmargyatra’ app and the emergency helpline 1033, providing a seamless communication channel for millions of travelers.

This safety measure uses existing telecom infrastructure without the need for additional roadside hardware, allowing quick and cost-effective deployment. With Reliability Jio’s vast subscriber base exceeding 500 million users, the initiative promises wide-reaching impact and real-time communication capabilities. The initial pilot phase will focus on identifying risky stretches of national highways and fine-tuning alert thresholds under select NHAI regional offices.

Following successful implementation, NHAI plans to collaborate with other telecom operators to expand the program nationwide, combining digital innovation with traffic safety efforts.
