New Train Between Bengaluru And Mumbai Planned After 30 Years, Vande Bharat Sleeper Soon
Direct rail connectivity between Bengaluru and Mumbai revived after decades with Vande Bharat sleeper proposal.
After nearly three decades, Bengaluru has received a new direct train connection to Mumbai, marking a major boost in intercity rail connectivity between Karnataka and Maharashtra. The new service was inaugurated as part of a broader set of railway announcements aimed at improving long-distance travel options for passengers.
Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw virtually flagged off a bi-weekly express train service connecting KSR Bengaluru with Lokmanya Tilak Terminus in Mumbai. The launch is being seen as a significant step in restoring and strengthening direct rail links between the two major metropolitan cities, which have seen limited direct connectivity for years.
Alongside the express train, officials also highlighted the upcoming introduction of a Vande Bharat Sleeper service between Bengaluru and Mumbai. The premium overnight train is expected to offer faster and more comfortable travel, reducing journey times compared to existing long-distance services such as the Udyan Express. The sleeper version is part of Indian Railways’ broader plan to modernise intercity travel with high-speed, comfort-focused trains.

Railway authorities have stated that the new developments are part of ongoing infrastructure expansion efforts across Karnataka, where multiple stations are being redeveloped and funding for rail projects has increased in recent years. Officials also indicated that improved connectivity between Bengaluru and Mumbai is intended to support growing passenger demand, especially from business and technology sectors that frequently travel between the two cities.
The Bengaluru–Mumbai corridor is among the busiest travel routes in western and southern India, and the addition of new services is expected to ease congestion and provide more travel options. The existing direct train service has long been considered insufficient for rising passenger traffic, prompting repeated demands for additional connectivity.
With both a new express service and an upcoming Vande Bharat Sleeper train on the horizon, Indian Railways is positioning the Bengaluru–Mumbai route as a key priority corridor. Authorities say further details on schedules and operations will be announced in the coming weeks as preparations continue for expanded services.
