New Aadhaar App Lets Users Manage Up to Five Profiles on One Phone

The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) has introduced a feature allowing users to manage up to five Aadhaar profiles on a single smartphone through the official Aadhaar App. The feature is aimed at making digital identity access more convenient for families who may need to manage Aadhaar credentials for multiple members. Under the new system, an individual with a valid Aadhaar number can create up to five profiles on one device, supporting UIDAI's “One Family One App” approach.

The Aadhaar App, developed and managed by UIDAI, is available on Android and iOS devices and provides users with several Aadhaar-related services. To register, users need to enter their Aadhaar number, select the relevant SIM card, complete face authentication and set a six-digit PIN. Once registered, eligible profiles can be accessed through the same smartphone, reducing the need to carry multiple physical Aadhaar documents or use separate devices for family members.

The app also provides an option to add a minor's Aadhaar profile under specified conditions. According to UIDAI, a minor can be added when the relationship with the guardian was established through biometric authentication during Aadhaar enrolment. The minor first enters their Aadhaar number, following which the guardian completes face authentication. If the minor has already undergone the Mandatory Biometric Update, the minor can complete face authentication themselves to add the profile.

Beyond profile management, the Aadhaar App offers several services, including mobile number and address updates, biometric locking and unlocking, authentication history checks, e-Aadhaar downloads, request tracking and sharing of Aadhaar contact cards. Users can also selectively share Aadhaar verifiable credentials and securely provide identity information to an Offline Verification Seeking Entity based on their consent. These features are intended to give Aadhaar holders greater control over how their digital identity information is accessed and shared.

Security remains a key component of the app, with registration requiring authentication and access protected through a six-digit PIN. The application also includes biometric lock and unlock controls, allowing users to manage the use of their Aadhaar biometrics. However, not every Aadhaar update is currently available through the app. UIDAI said changes to name, gender, email and date of birth cannot presently be made through the application.

For updates involving photographs, fingerprints or iris information, Aadhaar holders must visit an Aadhaar Seva Kendra or an Aadhaar enrolment and update centre. The ability to manage five profiles on one smartphone nevertheless provides families with a more convenient way to access eligible digital Aadhaar services. The feature is part of UIDAI's broader effort to expand digital Aadhaar services while improving convenience, security and reducing dependence on physical documents.
