Nestle Low-Fat Dairy Whitener Fails FSSAI Safety Standards During Delhi Hotel Inspection

FSSAI Flags Nestle Dairy Whitener

The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has flagged a Nestlé “Low Fat Dairy Whitener” after a sample collected from The Lalit hotel in New Delhi was found to be “unsafe” and “substandard” following laboratory testing. The food safety regulator said the sample did not comply with requirements prescribed under the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006. The product was identified during a food safety inspection at the hotel, which is operated by Bharat Hotels Ltd. in Connaught Place. FSSAI shared details of the finding in a post on X, describing the Nestlé product as “unsafe & sub-standard” following the laboratory analysis.

According to FSSAI, the sample of the dairy whitener was collected from the premises of Bharat Hotels and subsequently sent for laboratory examination. The testing determined that the product was non-compliant with applicable food safety requirements. The regulator's finding places the product under scrutiny from a food safety perspective, although the information released by FSSAI does not establish that every unit of the product available in the market has the same issue. The finding specifically relates to the sample collected during the inspection and tested by the designated laboratory.

The regulator said the laboratory analysis showed that the product breached food safety requirements under the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006. The legislation establishes standards and regulatory requirements for food products in India, with FSSAI responsible for overseeing compliance and taking action when products or food businesses are found to violate prescribed standards. A finding that a sample is “unsafe” and “substandard” can trigger regulatory measures concerning the handling and sale of the product at the premises where the sample was collected. In this case, the inspection at The Lalit brought the dairy whitener to the regulator's attention.

Bharat Hotels Ltd., which operates The Lalit in Connaught Place, was directed to halt the sale of the flagged product, according to the information released by FSSAI. The instruction means the hotel is required to stop selling the identified dairy whitener following the laboratory finding. The action forms part of the regulator's response to the non-compliant sample and is focused on preventing the product from being sold at the inspected premises while the food safety matter is addressed. Further regulatory action, if any, would depend on the findings and procedures followed by the relevant authorities.

The development also highlights the role of food safety inspections and laboratory testing in monitoring products used by restaurants and hotels. Food businesses are required to comply with standards governing the quality and safety of food products handled or served at their premises. Samples collected during inspections can be tested to determine whether they meet the applicable regulatory requirements. Where a laboratory identifies non-compliance, food safety authorities can direct businesses to take corrective measures and can initiate action under the relevant provisions of food safety law. Such inspections are intended to identify potential violations before they pose wider risks to consumers.

FSSAI's finding concerns the specific Nestlé Low Fat Dairy Whitener sample collected at The Lalit in New Delhi and should therefore be distinguished from a broader conclusion about all products carrying the same name or manufactured by the company. The regulator's post states that the tested sample was found unsafe and substandard and non-compliant under the food safety law. Bharat Hotels has been directed to halt its sale at the premises. The case now places attention on the regulatory process surrounding the sample, the nature of the laboratory finding and any further action that authorities may take following the inspection.
