Nepal Floods: 50 Indians Contacted Again, While Over 275 Remain Missing Amid Rescue Efforts

The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) on Saturday said contact had been re-established with around 50 Indian nationals who were previously uncontactable in Nepal following devastating floods and flash floods on Wednesday. The ministry said 108 Indian nationals had so far been rescued, while more than 275 Indian nationals and 128 persons of Indian origin remained missing or uncontactable. Indian authorities have been coordinating with local agencies to assist those affected by the disaster.

According to the MEA, the latest efforts have resulted in progress in locating Indian nationals who were caught up in the flooding. While contact has been restored with around 50 people, the ministry said the situation remains challenging, with more than 275 Indian nationals and 128 persons of Indian origin still reported missing or uncontactable. Search, rescue and relief operations are continuing in coordination with authorities and other stakeholders.

The ministry also provided an update on Indian nationals travelling through the region from China. As many as 598 Indian nationals safely crossed into Nepal from China over the past two days, according to local government sources in China. At the same time, around 900 Indian nationals remain on the Chinese side. The MEA said those individuals are safe and contactable, providing some reassurance amid the wider disruption caused by the floods.

Indian diplomatic missions in the region have been actively involved in the response. The Indian embassies in Kathmandu and Beijing have remained in contact with relevant stakeholders to ensure coordination of search, rescue and relief operations for Indian nationals affected by the flash floods. The missions are working to gather information about those who remain uncontactable while supporting rescue and evacuation efforts wherever possible.

The MEA said its missions have also taken steps to ensure the safety and well-being of Indian nationals who have already been rescued. Assistance is being provided to facilitate their return to India wherever required. The diplomatic missions are also monitoring the movement of Indian nationals returning through Nepal after undertaking the Kailash Manasarovar Yatra, with efforts being made to facilitate their transit amid the difficult conditions.

The floods have created significant challenges for people travelling and residing in affected areas of Nepal, prompting continued efforts by authorities to locate those whose whereabouts remain unknown. The Indian government said its diplomatic missions would continue coordinating with relevant agencies as search, rescue and relief operations progress. The latest figures indicate that while dozens of people have been located or rescued, a substantial number of Indian nationals and persons of Indian origin are still awaiting contact or confirmation of their safety.
