Navjot Kaur Sidhu Formally Expelled from Congress After Suspension and Resignation
Navjot Kaur Sidhu expelled from Congress; accuses Rahul Gandhi of being out of touch.
The Congress on Friday formally expelled former Punjab MLA Navjot Kaur Sidhu, five days after she announced her resignation from the party. The decision was confirmed by Congress’s Punjab affairs in-charge and former Chhattisgarh chief minister Bhupesh Baghel, who clarified that her earlier suspension from primary membership had now culminated in expulsion.
Baghel made the announcement while addressing the media in the presence of Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee (PPCC) chief Amarinder Singh Raja Warring. He stated that although Navjot Kaur Sidhu had already distanced herself from the party, the Congress had completed its internal disciplinary process to formalize her exit. The move follows months of strained relations between Sidhu and the party’s state and central leadership.
Reacting sharply, Navjot Kaur Sidhu launched a public attack on senior Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, using the derogatory “Pappu” jibe often employed by political opponents. In a post on X, she accused the party leadership of being disconnected from grassroots realities and alleged that a close coterie was misleading the leadership while benefiting personally. She also criticized what she described as delayed responses to internal crises, claiming such inaction had caused repeated political नुकसान to the party.

The rift dates back to December 8 last year, when Sidhu was suspended after making a controversial remark suggesting that massive financial backing was required to become chief minister. The comment triggered disciplinary action and drew sharp criticism from party leaders. In her exit note, she also accused PPCC chief Raja Warring of colluding with Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann to weaken the Congress in Punjab.
Navjot Kaur Sidhu, the wife of former cricketer and ex-Punjab Congress chief Navjot Singh Sidhu, has had a shifting political career. She previously served as a BJP MLA from Amritsar East before joining the Congress ahead of the 2017 assembly elections. Her recent social media activity, including a post welcoming Prime Minister Narendra Modi to Punjab, has fuelled speculation about a possible return to the BJP.
