Navi Mumbai Airport on Track, Maharashtra Tackles US Tariff Impact

Navi Mumbai airport nears completion; tariff aid planned

Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis announced that the Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA) is advancing rapidly toward its September 30, 2025, completion target, with 94% of construction already finished. Speaking to reporters after inaugurating the Capital Line Data Centre in Navi Mumbai, Fadnavis expressed confidence in meeting the deadline, emphasizing the project’s role in decongesting Mumbai’s Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport and boosting regional connectivity.

The NMIA, developed by Adani Airport Holdings Limited (AAHL) and CIDCO at a cost of ₹16,700 crore, features two runways, a 3,700-meter runway for large aircraft, and a state-of-the-art baggage handling system with 360-degree barcode scanning. Designed to handle 90 million passengers annually upon full completion, the airport will incorporate green energy, with 37 MW of renewable power and electric or alternative-fuel vehicles. Connectivity plans include links via Atal Setu, a proposed Thane elevated road, and metro integration, with passengers able to check luggage at city stations for seamless travel.

Addressing concerns over the 50% US tariffs on Indian exports announced in 2025, Fadnavis revealed that a preliminary meeting identified affected sectors in Maharashtra, particularly textiles, pharmaceuticals, and electronics. A high-power committee has been formed to analyze regional impacts, explore alternative markets like ASEAN or Middle Eastern countries, and recommend support measures such as subsidies or trade incentives. “The committee’s recommendations will be implemented to safeguard our industries,” he assured, signaling proactive steps to mitigate economic fallout.

Fadnavis also highlighted Maharashtra’s dominance in India’s digital infrastructure, noting that 60% of the country’s data centre capacity is located in the state. The newly inaugurated Capital Line Data Centre, described as India’s most advanced, features cutting-edge technology to support the digital economy’s growing demands. During the event, the state signed MoUs worth ₹20,000 crore with data centre operators for new facilities and logistics parks. Singapore’s Temasek committed ₹700 crore for a Nagpur hospital, while Mapletree pledged ₹3,000 crore for logistics development, reinforcing Maharashtra’s investment appeal.

The CM’s focus on infrastructure and economic resilience underscores Maharashtra’s ambition to remain a leader in aviation and technology. With NMIA set to transform the Mumbai Metropolitan Region into a global aviation hub and measures in place to counter tariff challenges, the state is positioning itself for sustained growth.
