National Students' Union of India Files Case Over CBSE OSM System Issues

NSUI moves court over CBSE OSM glitches, seeks probe into evaluation system.

The National Students’ Union of India (NSUI) has approached the Delhi High Court seeking judicial intervention over alleged technical irregularities in the Central Board of Secondary Education’s newly implemented On-Screen Marking (OSM) system for Class 12 board examinations, raising concerns about fairness and transparency in evaluation.

In its public interest litigation (PIL), the student organisation has called for a reopening of the verification process, manual re-evaluation of disputed answer sheets, and an independent investigation into the digital assessment system used by the Central Board of Secondary Education.

The CBSE introduced the OSM system at scale this year for Class 12 examinations, replacing traditional physical evaluation with a digital process where scanned answer sheets are uploaded and assessed on-screen by examiners. The move was aimed at streamlining evaluation and improving efficiency, while eliminating logistical delays associated with physical answer scripts.

However, following the declaration of results, concerns were raised by several students, with reports of missing pages, blurred scans, unmarked answers, and in some cases mismatched or incorrect answer sheets being uploaded. The overall Class 12 pass percentage also reportedly fell to a seven-year low, intensifying scrutiny of the system.

The NSUI has argued that these issues have led to widespread uncertainty among students and may have impacted results significantly. It has also highlighted difficulties faced by candidates in accessing the re-evaluation and verification portal, further complicating the grievance redressal process.

The PIL states that the petition has been filed on behalf of lakhs of students affected by the evaluation process, and seeks corrective measures including manual re-checking in disputed cases. The matter is expected to bring renewed judicial and administrative attention to the reliability of large-scale digital examination systems in India’s school education framework.
