Nara Lokesh Thanks President Murmu After Amaravati Gets Statutory Capital Recognition

Amaravati is officially declared permanent capital after Presidential assent to Reorganisation Amendment Bill.

Andhra Pradesh Minister for Human Resources Development Nara Lokesh, along with a delegation of NDA MPs from the state, met President Droupadi Murmu at Rashtrapati Bhavan on Monday to express gratitude following the approval of the Amaravati Bill, which gives statutory recognition to Amaravati as the sole and permanent capital of Andhra Pradesh.

During the meeting, Lokesh conveyed what he described as the “heartfelt gratitude” of the people of Andhra Pradesh for the Centre’s decision. He also shared on social media platform X that it was a privilege to meet the President and acknowledge the official recognition granted to Amaravati as the state’s capital. The delegation also included Union Minister of State Bhupathiraju Srinivasa Varma and other MPs from both Houses of Parliament.

According to official statements from Rashtrapati Bhavan, the delegation discussed the significance of the legislation and its implications for the state. President Murmu reportedly acknowledged the resilience of farmers associated with the Amaravati region, as well as the leadership efforts aimed at bringing clarity to the long-debated issue of the state capital.

As part of the meeting, Nara Lokesh also presented the President with a coffee table book documenting Amaravati’s development journey and the struggles of farmers connected to the capital region project. Lokesh, who is also the General Secretary of the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) and son of Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu, highlighted the emotional and political significance of the decision.

The Amaravati designation follows the President’s assent on April 6 to the Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation (Amendment) Bill, 2026, which was passed by both Houses of Parliament earlier in the month. The Lok Sabha cleared the Bill on April 1, followed by approval in the Rajya Sabha through a voice vote on April 2, after which the Union government issued a gazette notification formalising the change.

With the enactment of the Amendment Act, 2026, Amaravati has now been officially designated as the permanent capital of Andhra Pradesh under the updated provisions of the Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation Act, 2014, marking a significant administrative and political milestone for the state.
