Namo Bharat Rail Extension Plan Eyes Faster Delhi To Rishikesh Connectivity

Namo Bharat extension plan may cut Delhi–Rishikesh travel time significantly.

Plans to significantly cut travel time between the national capital and Rishikesh are gaining momentum, with authorities advancing a proposal to extend the Namo Bharat Rapid Rail corridor to the spiritual hub in Uttarakhand.

The proposed extension aims to connect Delhi with Rishikesh in just about three hours, a journey that currently takes five to six hours by road depending on traffic and weather conditions. The plan is part of a broader effort to expand India’s regional rapid transit network, improving connectivity between major urban centres and nearby tourist and religious destinations.

Officials familiar with the project said preliminary discussions and feasibility assessments are underway to evaluate the viability of extending the high-speed rail corridor beyond existing routes. The Namo Bharat system, already operational on select stretches, is designed to provide fast, reliable, and comfortable intercity travel with modern infrastructure and reduced transit times.

If approved, the extension is expected to pass through key cities in Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand, potentially boosting economic activity, tourism, and regional development along the route. Rishikesh, known for its spiritual significance and as a gateway to the Himalayas, attracts millions of visitors annually, and improved connectivity could further increase footfall.

The project aligns with the government’s broader infrastructure push aimed at modernising transport networks and reducing congestion on highways. By offering a high-speed alternative to road travel, the corridor could also contribute to lower emissions and improved travel efficiency, particularly for frequent commuters and pilgrims.

While timelines for the extension have not yet been finalised, the proposal has generated considerable interest among stakeholders and travellers alike. If implemented, the Delhi–Rishikesh rapid rail link would mark another major milestone in India’s evolving transport landscape, reshaping how people travel between the capital and northern hill destinations.
