Nagpur Violence: Shocking Details Emerge of Rioters Molesting Woman Constable

Rioters Molested Woman Constable, Attempted to Disrobe Her in Nagpur Violence

A group of rioters allegedly molested a woman constable, attempting to disrobe her, during violent clashes in Nagpur on Monday night, sparked by protests over Aurangzeb’s tomb in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar district. The shocking details emerged in an FIR filed at Ganeshpeth police station, as curfew persists across sensitive city areas.

The unrest erupted around 7:30 PM in Chitnis Park, Mahal, following rumors that a community’s holy book was desecrated during a right-wing agitation led by Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) and Bajrang Dal, demanding the Mughal emperor’s tomb removal.

A mob at Bhaldarpura chowk attacked police with petrol bombs, stones, axes, and iron rods, injuring 33 officers, including 15 in this clash. Amid the chaos, rioters targeted a Riot Control Police (RCP) woman constable, touching her inappropriately and attempting to tear off her uniform in the darkness, an official stated. The FIR notes the crowd also hurled abusive language, vulgar remarks, and obscene gestures at other female officers.

Police have arrested 51 rioters, including minors, charging them under 57 sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), alongside Arms Act and property damage laws. Five FIRs have been lodged citywide, with the Ganeshpeth case highlighting the assault on policewomen. Commissioner Ravinder Singal, leading a Tuesday route march, said investigations probe a “pre-planned conspiracy,” with 65 total detentions and CCTV reviews ongoing.

The violence, which torched 25 bikes and three cars, prompted a Section 163 BNSS curfew across 10 police station limits, including Kotwali and Lakadganj, enforced since 4:30 AM Tuesday. Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis condemned the attack, vowing strict action.
