Nagpur Airport Upgrade Plan Takes Off With ₹300 Crore First Phase Investment

Nagpur airport begins ₹300 crore first-phase infrastructure upgrade

Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar International Airport in Nagpur is set to undergo a multi-phase upgrade, with GMR Airports announcing an initial investment of around ₹300 crore to modernise the existing facility over the next 12 to 18 months. The expansion plan aims to strengthen passenger services, cargo capacity and commercial infrastructure at the airport. The announcement follows the completion of the airport’s privatisation process and the transfer of nearly 1,000 hectares of land by Maharashtra Airport Infrastructure Ltd (MIL) on June 25.

The handover has enabled GMR Nagpur International Airport Ltd (GNIAL) to begin operations and proceed with its long-term development plans for the aviation facility. As part of the first phase, GMR Airports will focus on upgrading the existing airport infrastructure to improve operational efficiency and passenger experience. The company’s broader roadmap includes phased expansion of airport facilities, development of cargo infrastructure and creation of commercial spaces to support future growth.

GBS Raju, chairman of GMR Airports, said airports play an important role in regional economic development by improving connectivity and supporting business growth. He said the Nagpur airport project reflects the company’s long-term vision of strengthening aviation infrastructure and creating new opportunities for the region. SGK Kishore, executive director and chief innovation officer of GMR Group, said the company aims to transform Nagpur Airport into a future-ready and sustainable aviation hub.

“Our vision for Nagpur Airport is to make it a future-ready, sustainable aviation hub that enhances connectivity,” Kishore said, adding that the company remains committed to developing world-class airports that support growth and sustainability. The development of Nagpur airport is expected to benefit the city’s position as a strategic location in central India. The airport’s connectivity is considered important for passenger movement, logistics, trade and industrial development, particularly due to Nagpur’s geographical advantage and growing economic activity.

The long-term expansion plan comes at a time when India’s aviation sector is witnessing rapid growth, with airports across the country undergoing modernisation and capacity enhancement projects. Increasing passenger demand and the rise of air cargo movement have pushed airport operators to invest in upgraded facilities and improved services. With the first phase of modernisation scheduled to begin soon, GMR Airports said the Nagpur project will focus on creating infrastructure capable of meeting future demand. The company’s multi-stage development plan is expected to gradually transform the airport into a major aviation hub supporting regional connectivity and economic progress.
