Nagaland DTO Building Collapses After Landslide Triggered By Heavy Rainfall

The District Transport Office (DTO) building in Tuensang's Post Office Ward collapsed on Thursday morning after a landslide triggered by prolonged rainfall in the Nagaland district. No loss of life was reported as the building had already been vacated after authorities declared it structurally unsafe. The collapse occurred amid continuing monsoon-related landslides and land subsidence in the area.

The building had been identified as being at risk of collapse following a structural and technical inspection. On July 23, 2026, Deputy Commissioner and DDMA Tuensang Chairman Lithrongla Tongpi Rutsa issued an emergency demolition order after the inspection found severe structural damage and the possibility of an imminent collapse due to incessant rainfall.

Following the order, the DTO office was closed from July 24 until further notice. Services linked to motor vehicles, including driving licence issuance, vehicle registration, tax collection and permits, were suspended. The administration also restricted public and unauthorised access to the affected area during the emergency demolition and safety operations.

The prolonged monsoon has caused significant disruption across Tuensang district. According to the Nagaland State Disaster Management Authority, 49 families had been evacuated since July 19, including 44 households located below the DTO building and five families from Post Office Ward and Bazar A Ward. Two unsafe buildings had already been dismantled, while demolition work on the DTO structure was underway.

Land subsidence near the DTO area was continuing at an estimated rate of six to eight inches a day, increasing concerns about the safety of surrounding structures and residents. The Disaster Response Force under PWD (Housing) was authorised to conduct the emergency demolition, while authorities maintained safety restrictions around the site to prevent further risks to residents and personnel.

The district administration has also established relief camps at Tuensang Town Hall and provided emergency assistance to families affected by the landslides and land subsidence. With rainfall continuing to pose a threat, authorities are monitoring vulnerable areas and have urged residents to follow evacuation and safety instructions. The collapse of the already-vacated DTO building avoided potential casualties in an area that had been experiencing worsening ground instability.
