Nagaland CM Highlights Role Of Women Weavers In Handloom Sector Growth

Nagaland Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio on Friday praised the state’s weavers, especially women artisans, for their contribution to preserving traditional textiles and cultural heritage. Addressing the 12th National Handloom Day programme, Rio said women weavers form the backbone of Nagaland’s handloom sector and play a vital role in sustaining the state’s rich weaving traditions.

Virtually inaugurating the Chief Minister’s Yarn Bank Scheme in Dimapur, Rio described the initiative as a significant step towards strengthening the handloom industry and improving the livelihoods of thousands of weavers across the state. He said handloom is not only a traditional craft but also a reflection of the identity, creativity and cultural values of the Naga people.

The Chief Minister highlighted that every shawl, wrap and woven design represents the stories, customs and heritage of different Naga tribes. He appreciated the dedication, skill and perseverance of artisans who have continued their craft despite changing times and economic challenges. Rio pointed out that access to affordable, high-quality natural yarn has been a major challenge for weavers. Many artisans have had to travel long distances to purchase raw materials, resulting in higher transportation costs and increased expenses that affect productivity and income.

To address these concerns, the Nagaland government launched the Yarn Bank at the District Industries Centre, State Industrial Park, in Dimapur. The facility will provide natural yarns, including cotton, eri silk, muga silk, bamboo fibre and other natural fibre blends, at mill-gate prices. Under the scheme, eligible weavers will receive a 15 per cent subsidy on yarn purchases, making raw materials more affordable. The initiative is expected to benefit around 5,000 to 10,000 weavers annually, with those holding Yarn Pass Books able to access supplies through a transparent distribution system.

Rio said the scheme goes beyond providing raw materials and reflects the government’s commitment to supporting artisans by reducing production costs, improving access to quality yarn and creating better economic opportunities. He added that strengthening the handloom sector would help empower women, encourage entrepreneurship, support rural livelihoods and protect Nagaland’s cultural heritage.

The Chief Minister urged weavers, cooperative societies, self-help groups, village institutions and community leaders to work together to ensure that the benefits of the scheme reach deserving artisans across the state. He expressed confidence that the Yarn Bank would become a long-term support system for Nagaland’s weaving community and help preserve its traditional crafts for future generations.
