Muslim Woman's Compassion Shines After Performing Hindu Man's Last Rites In Kasaragod

A Muslim woman panchayat member in Kerala's Kasaragod district has earned widespread appreciation after performing the last rites of a Hindu man according to his religious customs when his family reportedly declined to claim his body following his death from cancer. The humanitarian gesture, carried out with the assistance of local volunteers, has resonated widely on social media, with many praising it as an example of compassion transcending religious and social divides.

The deceased, identified as 64-year-old Narayanan, was a native of Chigrupadavu in Manjeswaram. He died on Thursday at the Government Medical College Hospital in Kozhikode after undergoing treatment for nearly a month for stage four cancer. According to officials and local volunteers, Narayanan had been battling advanced illness and had no immediate family members willing to take responsibility for his care or funeral after his death.

Speaking to PTI, Irfana Iqbal, Development Standing Committee chairperson of the Kasaragod District Panchayat, said Narayanan was found in a frail and starving condition on the veranda of a shop in Kasaragod about a month ago. The matter was first brought to her notice by a local ward member, following which she alerted the District Collector and the District Medical Officer. With the support of volunteers from a charitable foundation, she arranged immediate medical assistance, ensured he received primary care and facilitated his admission to Kozhikode Government Medical College Hospital for treatment.

Despite medical efforts, Narayanan succumbed to cancer after weeks of treatment. According to Iqbal, attempts were made to contact his family after his death, but they reportedly declined to claim the body. Faced with the situation, she decided to ensure that the deceased received a dignified farewell in accordance with Hindu traditions. Local residents and volunteers assisted in carrying out the funeral rites, ensuring that all customary rituals were observed with respect and sensitivity.

The incident has drawn widespread praise from people across communities, with many describing Iqbal's actions as a powerful reminder of humanity above religious identity. Social media users commended her for stepping forward when no one else did, while several civic organisations highlighted the importance of compassion and social responsibility in caring for vulnerable individuals. The gesture has also been cited as an example of communal harmony in a state known for its diverse religious and cultural fabric.
