Murshidabad Violence: Internet Suspension Extended to Malda, Birbhum

Amid ongoing tensions in West Bengal’s Murshidabad district, sparked by violent protests over the Waqf (Amendment) Act, authorities have extended the suspension of internet services to the neighboring districts of Malda and Birbhum.

The unrest, which has led to at least three deaths and widespread damage in areas like Suti, Jangipur, Dhulian, and Samserganj, prompted the initial internet blackout in Murshidabad’s troubled zones. The suspension, now expanded to additional areas in Murshidabad, Malda, and Birbhum, is set to continue until 10 PM on April 15 to curb misinformation and further violence.

The situation in Murshidabad has stabilized somewhat following joint patrolling by state police and Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF), ordered by the Calcutta High Court. The Border Security Force (BSF) is also on high alert along the Bangladesh border to prevent external interference.

Over 180 arrests have been made in connection with the violence, which saw torched vehicles and looted shops. Approximately 500 families, primarily from Dhulian and Samserganj, have sought refuge in a temporary relief camp in Malda. Prohibitory orders remain in place, and authorities are urging calm as they work to restore order.
