Mumbai Tutor Burns Child’s Hand Over Handwriting

Teacher charged for cruel candle punishment.

A disturbing incident in Mumbai’s Malad East led to the arrest of private tutor Rajshree Rathore, who allegedly burned the hand of her 8-year-old student, Mohammad Hamza Khan, with a lit candle as punishment for poor handwriting. The incident took place during an evening tuition session at Rathore’s residence in JP Decks Building. Hamza, a Class 3 student at Lakshadham School, attended regular classes from 7 pm to 9 pm.

According to Hamza’s father, Mustakeen Khan, the boy’s sister Rubina dropped him off as usual. Around 9 pm, Rathore called Khan, reporting that Hamza was crying uncontrollably and needed to be picked up. Upon returning home, Hamza disclosed that his teacher held his right palm over a candle flame, causing severe burns. He was immediately taken to a doctor and later transferred to Babasaheb Ambedkar Hospital for treatment.

Following Khan’s complaint, Malad police filed an FIR against Rathore and launched an investigation. The case has sparked outrage, raising concerns about child safety in educational settings.
