Mumbai to Host National Women’s Commission Summit to Boost Gender Justice
NCW’s Mumbai meet to train women’s panels to boost gender rights.
Mumbai will host a transformative two-day Capacity Building and Training Programme, titled ‘Shakti Samvad,’ organized by the National Commission for Women (NCW) in collaboration with the Maharashtra State Women Commission. The event, set to be inaugurated by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, will bring together chairpersons, members, and senior officers of State Women Commissions (SWCs) from across India.
According to NCW chairperson Vijaya Rahatkar, the programme is designed to enhance the institutional capacity of SWCs, equipping them with advanced tools and strategies to safeguard women’s rights, promote welfare, and advance gender equality. A key highlight of the inauguration will be the launch of an NCW book on the Prevention of Sexual Harassment (PoSH) at the Workplace, underscoring the commission’s commitment to workplace safety.
The programme’s agenda addresses a broad spectrum of issues impacting women, including policy, legal, social, and technological challenges. Panel discussions will focus on the evolving role of SWCs, tackling futuristic issues such as Artificial Intelligence and cybersecurity, which pose new risks to women’s safety. Sessions will also cover critical topics like menopause, mental well-being, and the societal value of unpaid care work under the theme ‘Care Matters.’
Participants will gain insights into the legacy of the 15 women framers of the Indian Constitution and receive orientation on new legal frameworks, including the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, with a focus on women’s perspectives. These discussions aim to empower SWCs to act as effective first responders for women in distress, ensuring gender equality reaches every corner of India.
The event will also introduce NCW’s newly formed Advisory Committee, comprising eminent figures from diverse fields, tasked with guiding strategic interventions for women’s empowerment. The programme will conclude with a collaborative strategy session to foster stronger partnerships between NCW and SWCs, reinforcing their collective role in advancing women’s rights nationwide.
Following a similar successful meeting in Ayodhya in April 2025, this Mumbai summit is poised to set a new benchmark for coordinated action. By equipping SWCs with sharper tools and deeper knowledge, ‘Shakti Samvad’ aims to drive systemic change, ensuring women’s commissions remain at the forefront of the fight for gender justice and equality.
