Mumbai Schools, Colleges to Stay Shut on July 7 Amid Red Alert

Mumbai schools, colleges to remain closed July 7 amid red alert.

Schools and colleges in Mumbai will remain closed on Tuesday, July 7, as the city braces for another spell of intense rainfall under a red alert issued by the India Meteorological Department. Authorities have also urged private companies to allow employees to work from home wherever possible, while warning that the closure of educational institutions could be extended if severe weather conditions continue.

Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation schools and colleges will remain shut on Tuesday following continuous heavy rainfall across the city. Mumbai Mayor Ritu Tawde said the closure could be extended by another day or two if conditions fail to improve. Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis also confirmed that schools and colleges would remain closed because of the worsening weather.

The IMD has issued a red alert for Mumbai, Thane, Raigad, Pune and the ghat areas of Nashik, warning of very heavy rainfall, strong winds and possible waterlogging. Authorities are sending frequent weather alerts to residents and have urged people to avoid unnecessary travel. The combination of intense rain, strong winds and high tides has increased concerns over flooding in low-lying areas.

Private companies have been asked to allow employees to work from home wherever possible, although the advisory does not amount to a blanket holiday for all offices. Essential services and emergency operations are expected to continue, while local train services remain operational. Residents have been advised to check official updates before travelling as road, rail and air movement could face disruption during intense spells of rain.

The closure of schools and colleges may continue beyond July 7 if the weather remains severe. Authorities have said any extension will depend on rainfall levels and updated forecasts, meaning there is currently no fixed date for all educational institutions to reopen. The administration is monitoring the situation and working to respond to waterlogging and other rain-related emergencies.

Mumbai and neighbouring districts have already faced days of heavy monsoon rain, disrupting normal life and forcing precautionary closures. With further intense rainfall forecast, residents have been asked to remain indoors wherever possible and follow official instructions. Parents, students and employees should monitor announcements from civic authorities and institutions for any further extension of the closure beyond Tuesday.
