Mumbai Police Direct Jarange to Quit Protest by Noon
Hunger strike defies court, cripples city as tensions escalate rapidly
Tensions escalated in Mumbai as police issued a stern notice to activist Manoj Jarange and his team on Tuesday, demanding they vacate Azad Maidan, the site of his ongoing hunger strike for Maratha reservation rights. Now in its fifth day, Jarange’s protest has disrupted the city, violating Bombay High Court guidelines.
The court, noting that Mumbai was "brought to a standstill" by the agitation, ordered protesters to clear all streets by noon Tuesday to restore normalcy. The Azad Maidan police cited breaches of pre-agitation conditions as the reason for the notice.
Jarange, a prominent voice for Maratha inclusion in the Other Backward Classes (OBC) category for reservation benefits, faces mounting pressure as authorities push to reclaim order in the city. With the deadline looming, all eyes are on whether Jarange and his supporters will comply or escalate their stand.
