Mumbai MP Demands Liquor Shop Shutdown in Breach Candy

Supriya Sule cites safety, nuisance concerns for residents.

In a fervent appeal to Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar, NCP (SP) MP Supriya Sule has called for the immediate closure of liquor shops in Mumbai’s upscale Breach Candy area. In a letter dated August 25, 2025, Sule raised alarms over the safety and well-being of local residents, pointing to mounting complaints about law and order issues caused by these establishments in the residential neighborhood.

Sule highlighted concerns voiced by the Breach Candy residents’ forum, which reported that liquor outlets are creating a public nuisance. The proximity of these shops to two schools and a hospital has sparked particular outrage, with residents arguing that the outlets foster a disruptive environment unsuitable for such sensitive locations. “The presence of liquor shops near educational and medical institutions is highly inappropriate and undermines the peace of the community,” Sule stated in her letter.

The MP detailed additional grievances, including traffic congestion, noise pollution, and late-night gatherings that have led to gambling and public disturbances. Women and senior citizens, in particular, have expressed fears for their safety, with reports of harassment and frequent quarrels necessitating police intervention. Sule noted that approximately 200 residents have signed a memorandum demanding the closure of these liquor outlets, reflecting widespread community discontent.

“The safety of women, children, and senior citizens is paramount,” Sule emphasized. “The state government must act swiftly to address these legitimate concerns and restore tranquility to Breach Candy.” She urged the authorities to take decisive action to shut down the liquor shops, arguing that their continued operation threatens the harmony of one of Mumbai’s most prominent residential areas.

The issue has sparked broader discussions about the regulation of liquor outlets in urban residential zones, with residents calling for stricter enforcement of zoning laws. As Breach Candy awaits a response from the state government, Sule’s letter underscores the growing tension between commercial interests and community welfare in Mumbai’s evolving urban landscape.
