Mumbai Metro Sets New Ridership Record of 3.65 Lakh Amid Heavy Rain
Mumbai metro records 3.65 lakh ridership amid heavy rain.
Mumbai’s metro network recorded another major ridership milestone on Thursday as heavy monsoon rain pushed more commuters towards rapid transit services. Four metro corridors operated by the Maha Mumbai Metro Operation Corporation Limited registered a combined 3,65,845 passenger journeys in a single day, breaking the previous record for the second time in two months.
The record was recorded across Metro Line 2A between Dahisar East and Gundavali, Line 7 between Dahisar West and Andheri West, Line 9 between Dahisar and Kashigaon, and Line 2B between Mankhurd and Diamond Garden in Chembur. The sharp increase came as repeated monsoon showers caused severe waterlogging on several roads and disrupted surface travel across the city.
Mumbai’s other two operational corridors also carry large numbers of passengers on weekdays. Metro Line 1 averages around five lakh commuters daily, while Line 3 carries about 1.5 lakh passengers. Combined with the record ridership on the four MMMOCL-operated lines, the city’s total metro usage on Thursday was estimated at around 10.15 lakh passenger journeys.

The reopening of schools after the summer break, combined with persistent heavy rainfall, has also contributed to increased metro usage. More commuters have turned to the network as an alternative to waterlogged roads and other transport disruptions. A decline in major technical incidents has further helped the system accommodate the growing number of passengers during the monsoon period.
The latest record surpassed the 3,58,115 passengers recorded across the four MMMOCL lines on June 23, when heavy rain also affected Mumbai. On the same day, the Aqua Line recorded 2,13,704 passenger journeys. Metro operations have faced some recent disruptions, including a technical snag on Line 2B on July 4 that affected services for nearly two hours.
Ridership is expected to rise further with planned additions to Mumbai’s public transport network. An additional station on Line 2B in Chembur and the resumption of monorail services are expected to increase passenger numbers once opened. The monorail has remained shut since September 2025, and the Maharashtra government has not yet announced a date for the proposed simultaneous openings.
