Mumbai Metro 3 Introduces Free Wi-Fi to Improve Connectivity and Digital Ticketing

Mumbai Metro 3 launches free Wi-Fi across Aqua Line stations to enhance connectivity and ease digital ticketing.

The Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation (MMRC) has launched free Wi-Fi across all 27 stations of Metro Line 3, known as the Aqua Line, in a bid to address widespread passenger complaints about poor mobile connectivity in the underground corridor. Announced on Tuesday, the initiative aims to enhance commuter convenience by enabling seamless digital ticket booking via the MetroConnect3 mobile app. The Wi-Fi service, available at the concourse level of stations from Aarey JVLR to Cuffe Parade, marks a significant step toward modernizing Mumbai’s first fully underground metro, which saw over 1.6 lakh passengers on Monday alone.

To access the free Wi-Fi, commuters must download the MetroConnect3 app, sign in before entering a station, connect to the “MetroConnect3” network via their device’s Wi-Fi settings, and tap “Connect to Wi-Fi” in the app’s Profile section. The service, currently limited to ticket booking, offers a secure and reliable solution for passengers who previously struggled with network blackouts underground, hindering their ability to purchase digital tickets. MMRC has urged Mumbaikars to leverage this facility, which complements other ticketing options like WhatsApp and the Mumbai One app, to streamline their travel experience.

The rollout follows persistent connectivity challenges reported since the Aqua Line’s phased openings, with Phase 1 (Aarey JVLR–BKC) launched in October 2024 and Phase 2B (BKC–Cuffe Parade) inaugurated on October 8, 2025, by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The 33.5-kilometer corridor, Mumbai’s first fully underground metro, has faced criticism for signal disruptions, exacerbated by a standoff between MMRC and telecom providers over shared In-Building Solutions (IBS). While MMRC works with ACES India and BSNL to deploy advanced 4G and 5G IBS across stations and tunnels, the free Wi-Fi serves as an immediate fix for ticketing woes.

The initiative aligns with MMRC’s broader vision of a “Seamless Mumbai,” integrating digital tools like the MetroConnect3 app, which offers real-time train updates, fare calculators, and last-mile connectivity planning. The corporation’s partnership with Cityflo for bus services from key stations like BKC and Worli further enhances commuter mobility. As Mumbai Metro 3 transforms urban travel, reducing north-south journeys to under an hour, the free Wi-Fi rollout underscores MMRC’s commitment to a smarter, more connected commuting experience for millions of daily passengers.
