Mumbai Mayor Race: Uddhav Sena Claims BJP Planning to Move Corporators
Uddhav Sena accuses BJP of planning to shift corporators amid hotel camp claims and mayor suspense.
The contest for the mayor’s chair in India’s richest civic body, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), has reignited familiar tropes of Maharashtra politics—hotel rooms, razor-thin numbers, and sharp exchanges. The drama unfolded after the BJP–Shiv Sena (Shinde faction) combine narrowly crossed the majority mark in the recent elections.
At the centre of the unfolding political tussle is Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, who on Sunday night met 29 new corporators from his faction who were lodged at the Taj Land’s End in Bandra. The meeting was widely seen as an effort to consolidate support ahead of the mayoral vote.
Reports suggest that BJP leaders have been engaged in behind-the-scenes discussions, attempting to secure alliances and ensure the Shinde faction’s victory in the mayoral election. The negotiations reportedly included the usual mix of political bargaining and reassurances on positions and responsibilities.

Adding to the drama, some Shinde faction corporators have allegedly jostled with party leaders over internal ticket distribution, prompting sharp verbal exchanges. Sources described an atmosphere of “tension mixed with strategy”, where even a casual remark could be construed as a warning or challenge.
The "jail" jibe—thrown during a heated exchange—has further highlighted the intensity of the political contest. Analysts say such comments, while dramatic, reflect the high stakes in BMC politics, where control of the mayoral office translates into significant administrative influence and financial oversight.
With the mayoral vote approaching, Maharashtra’s political corridors are abuzz with speculation. Observers note that this episode is yet another reminder of how power dynamics in state politics often play out in public view, blending strategy, theatre, and realignment of alliances.
