Mumbai Coastal Road Now Open 24/7 for All

Iconic road transforms travel with round-the-clock access.

The Dharmaveer Swarajya Rakshak Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj Road, widely known as the Mumbai Coastal Road, has officially opened its entire 10.58-km stretch for round-the-clock vehicular traffic, a Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) official announced. Effective from Saturday morning, August 16, all four-wheelers and buses can now access both southbound and northbound lanes, including bridges, tunnels, and underpasses, marking a significant milestone in Mumbai’s infrastructure development.

The BMC issued an order on Friday to fully operationalize the coastal road, following the completion of all construction work. This transformative project, connecting Marine Lines in South Mumbai to Kandivali in the northern suburbs, aims to slash travel time between these points from over an hour to under 20 minutes during peak hours. The road features four lanes in each direction, two 1.8-km tunnels, and multiple interchanges, offering a scenic and efficient route along Mumbai’s western coastline.

As part of the transition, the northbound connector from Khan Abdul Gaffar Khan Road to the Bandra-Worli Rajiv Gandhi Sea Link has been permanently closed, as it is no longer needed with the coastal road fully functional. “This is a game-changer for Mumbai’s commuters, easing congestion and enhancing connectivity,” the BMC official stated.

The Rs 14,000-crore project, partially opened in phases since March 2024, has been lauded for reducing traffic on existing arterial roads like Western Express Highway. Commuters like Priya Sharma, a daily traveler from Worli to Malad, expressed relief: “The coastal road has cut my commute time in half, and 24/7 access makes it even better.”

The BMC has also implemented advanced traffic management systems, including real-time monitoring and signage, to ensure smooth flow and safety. Environmental measures, such as reclaimed land for green spaces and a planned 70-acre coastal park, address ecological concerns raised during the project’s development. With its full opening, the Mumbai Coastal Road is poised to redefine urban mobility in the city.
