Mumbai-Ahmedabad Bullet Train Gains Momentum — OHE Masts Installed Under Make in India
Overhead electrification mast installation advances across viaducts, paving the way for reliable electric traction on India's inaugural high-speed rail corridor.
Union Railways Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw on Monday said that the Mumbai–Ahmedabad Bullet Train project is witnessing steady progress, with the installation of Overhead Electrification (OHE) masts advancing across key sections of the high-speed rail corridor.
The minister said the ongoing work marks a crucial milestone in enabling electric traction for India’s first high-speed rail system. He added that the progress reflects consistent on-ground execution under the government’s ‘Make in India’ initiative, which aims to strengthen domestic manufacturing while adopting globally proven high-speed rail technologies.
Vaishnaw noted that OHE mast installation is underway along major stretches of the alignment, including elevated viaduct sections. These structures are essential for ensuring safe, smooth, and efficient operations of bullet trains, as they form the backbone of the traction infrastructure required to supply reliable power to high-speed services.

According to officials, the OHE masts are being erected at considerable heights above ground level on viaducts. In total, more than 20,000 masts, ranging from 9.5 metres to 14.5 metres in height, are planned to be installed along the Mumbai–Ahmedabad corridor. These masts will support the complete 2×25 kV overhead traction power system, including overhead wires, earthing systems, fittings, and associated accessories.
To ensure uninterrupted traction power along the route, a network of Traction Substations (TSS) and Distribution Substations (DSS) is also being developed throughout the corridor. This power infrastructure is designed to meet the demanding operational requirements of high-speed rail services.
Once completed, the Mumbai–Ahmedabad Bullet Train is expected to significantly reduce travel time between the two cities and improve connectivity across western India. The minister said the project will benefit passengers, boost local economies, and support Indian industry through job creation, while marking a major step towards the adoption of advanced rail technology and world-class transport infrastructure in the country.
