Muharram 2026 Holiday Status: Schools And Colleges Closed For Friday

Schools may close Friday for Muharram 2026 observance.

Schools and colleges across several states in India are expected to remain closed on Friday, June 26, 2026, as the country observes Muharram, one of the most significant occasions in the Islamic calendar. The Day of Ashura, which falls on the 10th day of Muharram, will be marked on this date in India, making it a key public holiday period for educational institutions and government establishments in multiple regions.

According to official holiday notifications, June 26 has been declared a gazetted holiday for Muharram. As a result, central government offices across the country will remain closed. Educational institutions, including schools and colleges, are also likely to observe the holiday in several states, although final closure decisions may depend on state-specific announcements and local moon sighting confirmations.

States where closures are expected to be widely observed include Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh, Delhi, Telangana, Jammu and Kashmir, and West Bengal, among others. However, authorities have advised parents and students to verify holiday schedules with individual schools and colleges, as implementation may vary depending on regional administrative decisions and institutional policies.

The holiday will also impact financial and public services. Stock markets, including the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) and National Stock Exchange (NSE), are expected to remain shut for the day. In addition, banking operations in several states will be suspended in line with Reserve Bank of India guidelines, covering regions such as Karnataka, Bihar, Madhya Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, and others, depending on local observance rules.

With June 27 falling on the fourth Saturday and June 28 being a Sunday, many parts of the country may effectively experience a three-day break for banking and public services. Muharram marks the beginning of the Islamic New Year, and Ashura holds deep religious significance for both Sunni and Shia Muslims, observed through prayers, remembrance, and community gatherings.
