MP Govt Suspends 3 Officials After Six Children Contract HIV From Blood Transfusions

MP suspends officials after transfusion scandal.

The Madhya Pradesh government has taken decisive administrative action by suspending three key officials connected to a government blood bank in Satna district, following revelations that six children contracted HIV through allegedly contaminated blood transfusions administered at state-run hospitals. This swift response underscores the seriousness with which authorities are treating the incident, aiming to ensure accountability in public health services.

Based on findings from a preliminary report submitted by an investigative committee established by the Public Health and Family Welfare Department on December 16, the suspensions were enforced with immediate effect. The committee was promptly constituted after the alarming cases surfaced, highlighting potential systemic failures in blood screening and storage protocols at the facility.

The suspended personnel include blood bank in-charge Dr Devendra Patel, as well as laboratory technicians Ram Bhai Tripathi and Nandlal Pandey, all directly associated with the operations of the blood bank implicated in the matter. Additionally, a formal show-cause notice has been issued to Manoj Shukla, the former civil surgeon of Satna district hospital, requiring him to provide a detailed written explanation for the oversight, with explicit warnings of severe departmental consequences if his justification is deemed insufficient.

The six affected children, ranging in age from 12 to 15 years, received the transfusions at various government hospitals, including those in Satna and Jabalpur, during the period spanning January to May of the current year. Health officials further disclosed that the parents of one of the infected children have also tested positive for HIV, raising concerns about possible broader transmission risks.

All the children are presently under medical care, receiving comprehensive treatment aligned with national HIV management guidelines, while the state administration has pledged to implement further measures upon submission of the committee's complete investigation report, ensuring thorough rectification of any identified lapses in the blood transfusion process.
