"Months Of Preparation, One Cancellation": NEET Aspirants Back to Square One

NEET aspirants from Uttar Pradesh and Delhi have resumed intense studies after the sudden cancellation of the exam.

The cancellation of the NEET-UG examination has pushed thousands of medical aspirants back into uncertainty, forcing students across the country to restart months of preparation while dealing with emotional stress and frustration. From Delhi to Uttar Pradesh, many candidates have now returned to libraries and coaching centres, preparing once again for a re-examination whose schedule remains uncertain.

In a small library in Loni, Ghaziabad, several aspirants resumed their studies shortly after news of the cancellation emerged. Among them was 20-year-old Harsh Dubey, who had taken a drop year to prepare for NEET. Harsh, whose father is a farmer from Kannauj in Uttar Pradesh, said his family tried to encourage him despite understanding how exhausting the situation had become after months of intense preparation.

Harsh revealed that his father was the first person to inform him about the cancellation of the examination. According to him, his father motivated him to continue revising and remain focused despite the disappointment. Harsh and his younger brother Dushyant currently live in a rented room near the library and spend most of their day studying through self-preparation methods instead of expensive coaching programmes.

The aspirant said this was not the first time NEET candidates had faced controversy surrounding the examination. Referring to the 2024 examination cycle, Harsh recalled that allegations of paper leaks had surfaced even then, but the examination was not cancelled. According to him, the resulting high cut-offs had already made the competition extremely difficult for honest students.

His younger brother Dushyant questioned why genuine candidates continue to suffer because of repeated security failures. He said lakhs of students prepare honestly throughout the year, only to face uncertainty due to alleged misconduct by a few individuals. He also criticised repeated assurances regarding examination security, arguing that students continue to bear the consequences every year despite claims of multiple safety layers and monitoring systems.

The NEET-UG examination is one of the largest entrance tests in India, with nearly 22 lakh aspirants appearing annually for admission into undergraduate medical programmes across the country. The latest cancellation has once again triggered concerns regarding examination management, transparency, accountability, and the growing mental pressure faced by students preparing for highly competitive entrance tests.
