Monsoon Session: IIM Guwahati Set for National Glory
Bill introduced to make IIM Guwahati nationally important.
A transformative bill to designate the Indian Institute of Management (IIM) Guwahati as an institution of national importance was introduced in the Lok Sabha on Monday, marking a significant step toward enhancing Assam’s educational landscape. Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan presented the bill amid protests from opposition members over the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in Bihar.
The draft law stems from a Memorandum of Settlement (MoS) signed by the central government, the Assam government, and representatives of the United Liberation Front of Assam (ULFA). This agreement aims to drive comprehensive development in Assam through a Special Development Package (SDP), with the establishment of IIM Guwahati as a key project. The initiative addresses Assam’s long-standing demand for a premier management institute, given its population of over three crore and strategic geographical significance.
Currently, 21 IIMs across India hold the status of institutions of national importance under the Indian Institutes of Management Act, 2017. The inclusion of IIM Guwahati in this schedule will make it the 22nd such institute and the second in the Northeast after IIM Shillong, established in 2007. The Union Cabinet approved the bill on August 12, allocating over Rs 500 crore to support the project, which is expected to bolster Guwahati’s position as a hub for quality higher education alongside institutions like IIT Guwahati and AIIMS Changsari.

The Assam government has emphasized the need for an IIM to foster advanced academic programs, research, and entrepreneurship, which will drive regional and national economic growth. The institute is poised to attract top faculty and students, enhancing employability and integrating the Northeast more closely with national economic networks. The bill’s introduction has sparked optimism, with Assam Chief Minister expressing gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi for supporting the state’s development goals.
