Monsoon Fury: Heavy Rains Flood Gondia, Bhandara; Villages Isolated, Roads Submerged

Heavy Rains Flood Gondia, Bhandara, Isolating Villages

Relentless rainfall battered Gondia and Bhandara districts in Maharashtra on Tuesday, submerging roads, isolating villages, and triggering a landslide that disrupted traffic on the Nagpur-Raipur National Highway 53 at Masulkasa Ghat. Authorities are scrambling to clear debris and restore connectivity, police reported.

In Bhandara, the Wainganga River surged past its danger mark of 245 meters, prompting urgent warnings to avoid water bodies. All 33 gates of the Gosikhurd Dam were opened to manage floodwaters, while in Gondia, four gates of the Pujaritola Dam were lifted, officials said.

Flooding crippled key routes, including Jawari-Kidangipaar in Amgaon, Girola-Ghategaon in Sadak Arjuni, and Ghatkuroda-Ghogra in Tirora tehsils of Gondia. In Bhandara, 13 roads—eight in Tumsar, three in Mohadi, and two in Bhandara taluka—were closed due to inundation.

Gondia’s Deori circle recorded the highest rainfall at 240.5 mm in the last 24 hours, followed by Mahagaon, Keshori, and Gothangaon at 234.8 mm, with 33 of 41 administrative circles drenched. In Bhandara, Lakhandur tehsil saw 164.7 mm, Paoni 155.1 mm, and Tumsar 147.6 mm, said disaster management officer Rajan Choubey.

The deluge has sparked fears of crop damage and further disruption, with authorities urging residents to stay vigilant as the monsoon intensifies.
