Mohan Bhagwat Says India’s History Is Continuous Resistance Against Invaders
Mohan Bhagwat describes India’s history as continuous resistance.
Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) chief Mohan Bhagwat on Wednesday said that India’s history is not one of subjugation but of continuous resistance against invaders, making these remarks while addressing a public gathering in Udaipur on the occasion of Maharana Pratap’s birth anniversary and the anniversary of the Battle of Haldighati.
Bhagwat was speaking at the ‘Rashtra Chetna Sankalp Sabha’ held at Gandhi Maidan in Udaipur, where he highlighted the legacy of Maharana Pratap as a symbol of collective resistance and self-respect. He said that the Battle of Haldighati represented not just a military engagement but a wider societal struggle, adding that historical accounts, including those of Mughal chroniclers, indicate the resilience shown by Maharana Pratap’s forces.
The RSS chief stated that Maharana Pratap fought against a stronger Mughal army in terms of manpower and resources but did not abandon resistance despite limited means. He described the battle as an example of determination and sacrifice, noting the role of figures such as Chetak and the bravery displayed during the conflict. He also said that different phases of the battle reflected sustained pressure on Mughal forces.

Bhagwat further remarked that Indian society has historically resisted external domination and preserved its cultural identity despite repeated invasions. He said that while historical narratives often reflect the perspective of those in power, there is a need to re-examine events such as the Battle of Haldighati to understand them in their full context. He cited examples from other historical figures, suggesting that resistance movements have often been portrayed differently in mainstream accounts.
The RSS chief added that Maharana Pratap’s life represents values of self-respect, cultural preservation, and national unity, and called for greater study of historical figures by the younger generation. He also stressed the importance of social unity and organisation, saying that society must remain cohesive not only during crises but also in normal times to uphold cultural values and national interest.
