Mithun Chakraborty Announces 30% Subsidy For Film Productions In West Bengal

Actor and BJP leader Mithun Chakraborty has announced a 30 per cent subsidy for film productions that choose West Bengal as a shooting destination. The announcement came after he was appointed as the cultural advisor to the BJP government in the state on Friday. Chakraborty indicated that the initiative is aimed at attracting filmmakers from across India and strengthening West Bengal’s position as a major film production destination.

A day earlier, while attending a programme marking the birth centenary of legendary Bengali actor Uttam Kumar, Chakraborty had revealed that he had made a special request to Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari for the subsidy. According to Chakraborty, the request received approval from the Chief Minister. The proposed incentive is expected to encourage more film productions to consider locations across Bengal for their projects.

After being given his new role, Chakraborty explained that the subsidy was part of efforts to restore the prominence that the state had previously enjoyed in the film industry. He expressed the intention of bringing filmmakers and production teams from across the country to Bengal. The move could provide greater opportunities for local technicians, artists and other professionals associated with the film and entertainment sector.

Chakraborty also responded to former Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s announcement that she would consider holding protests outside the residences of BJP leaders in Delhi over alleged attacks involving Trinamool Congress workers. Referring to her allegations of atrocities, Chakraborty questioned the political criticism and maintained that BJP workers in West Bengal had themselves faced difficulties.

The remarks came after Mamata Banerjee accused the BJP of sending alleged attackers following an incident involving the office of Trinamool Congress general secretary Abhishek Banerjee. She had indicated plans to take the issue to New Delhi if such incidents continued. Chakraborty criticised the remarks while maintaining that he generally avoids making personal attacks in political exchanges.

Meanwhile, Chief Minister Adhikari announced Chakraborty’s appointment while attending the foundation stone laying ceremony of the Uttam Kumar Film Centre at New Town, on the northern outskirts of Kolkata. The centre is being developed at an estimated cost of Rs 25 crore, with funding already sanctioned by the State Information and Cultural Affairs Department. Adhikari also indicated that experts from the Bengali film industry would be involved in finalising the centre’s design, with the government intending to leave the creative aspects to professionals.
