Missing IAF Sukhoi Su-30 Fighter Jet Crashes In Assam
IAF Sukhoi Su-30 fighter jet crashes in Assam after going missing during mission.
A fighter jet belonging to the Indian Air Force crashed in Assam after it went missing during a routine operation, prompting authorities to launch an extensive search and rescue mission in the region. The aircraft, identified as a Sukhoi Su-30MKI, reportedly lost contact with ground control before going down in the forested terrain of Sonitpur district.
According to initial reports, the twin-engine fighter aircraft had taken off for a scheduled sortie when communication with the air traffic control network was suddenly lost. Soon after the aircraft was reported missing, the Indian Air Force initiated emergency procedures and began efforts to determine the possible location of the jet.
Search operations were quickly launched involving air force personnel, local authorities and rescue teams. Officials said the suspected crash site lies in a remote area covered with dense forests, making the search effort challenging. Teams have been deployed to comb the region and locate the wreckage of the aircraft as well as ascertain the status of the crew members on board.

The Su-30MKI is among the most advanced fighter jets in the Indian Air Force fleet and plays a crucial role in India’s air defence strategy. Developed jointly by Russia’s Sukhoi and India’s Hindustan Aeronautics Limited, the aircraft is a multirole fighter capable of performing air superiority missions, ground attacks and long-range patrol operations.
Over the years, the Su-30MKI has been deployed across several key air bases in India and is widely considered a backbone of the country’s combat aviation capability. The aircraft’s advanced avionics, powerful engines and ability to carry a wide range of weapons make it one of the most versatile platforms in the Indian Air Force’s arsenal.
Defence officials said that more information about the crash will be available once search teams reach the exact location of the wreckage. The priority at present is to locate the aircraft and determine the safety of the pilots involved. Standard protocol in such incidents includes immediate search and rescue efforts followed by a technical investigation into the cause of the crash.
Military aircraft accidents are relatively rare but are taken seriously due to the strategic importance of such platforms and the safety of highly trained personnel who operate them. When such incidents occur, the Indian Air Force usually orders a detailed inquiry to examine factors such as technical malfunction, weather conditions and operational circumstances.
Authorities have not yet confirmed the cause of the crash or released further operational details. Search operations are continuing in the area, and additional updates are expected once rescue teams gain access to the crash site and complete preliminary assessments of the situation.
