Minister Chooses Brain Over Bots: Gemini vs Grok Debate Meets India's Sarvam AI Push

Minister Vaishnaw backs human thinking while unveiling India’s AI and chip advancements.

At the NDTV World Summit, Union Minister for Electronics and Information Technology Ashwini Vaishnaw articulated a preference for human intellect over artificial intelligence, underscoring India’s ambitious strides in technological self-reliance. When questioned about using large language models like Grok or Gemini for his work, Vaishnaw quipped, “I like to think, don’t have a problem with attention span,” and affirmed, “I try to use my own brain.” However, he expressed enthusiasm for India’s homegrown innovation, announcing that he would adopt Bengaluru-based startup Sarvam’s AI model, slated for launch between December 2025 and January 2026.

Vaishnaw outlined India’s transformative digital agenda, spotlighting breakthroughs in semiconductor design, AI compute infrastructure, and resource independence. A landmark achievement is India’s foray into designing 2-nanometer chips, described as “the smallest, most complex” components, aligning with the nation’s “Aatmanirbhar Bharat” vision for self-reliant technology. This development positions India as a formidable player in global semiconductor innovation.

The Minister emphasized the critical role of compute infrastructure in India’s AI ecosystem, stating, “Compute facilities are a key facet of India’s AI journey.” To this end, the government is actively courting global tech giants to establish advanced computing facilities in India. Vaishnaw confirmed that “Meta is working on investment for compute facility in India,” while plans for a Google AI Hub in Visakhapatnam were hailed as “very good for our country.” He stressed the importance of localized compute infrastructure, noting, “Once we have them, the ability to do good research and develop AI applications will significantly increase.”
