Messi’s World Cup 2026 Participation Still Uncertain, Says Argentina Coach Scaloni

Argentina coach Scaloni confirms Lionel Messi hasn’t decided yet on playing in the 2026 World Cup.

Argentina Coach Lionel Scaloni has delivered a cautious update on Lionel Messi's participation in the 2026 FIFA World Cup, stating the team is "just awaiting for him to decide" while expressing hope that the 38-year-old superstar will make the call that's best for him. The remarks, made during Friday's World Cup draw ceremony at the Kennedy Center, come amid growing speculation about whether Messi will pursue a record sixth tournament appearance, turning 39 during the event hosted across the US, Canada, and Mexico.

Scaloni, who led Argentina to glory in Qatar 2022, emphasized Messi's earned autonomy after a career-defining run that includes three straight Copa América titles and the World Cup crown. "Although it may seem like the World Cup is near, six months is a long time. Let's hope he's doing well and makes the decision that's best for him. He has earned the right to decide," Scaloni said. The coach added that the squad would support whatever Messi chooses, underscoring the forward's pivotal role in their recent dominance despite his ongoing recovery from injuries at Inter Miami.

Messi himself has been noncommittal but optimistic in recent interviews, revealing discussions with Scaloni about potential off-field roles if fitness prevents a playing return. "The truth is we've been talking about it. He understands, and we've discussed it a lot," Messi told ESPN, adding, "I'd love to be there... At worst, I'll be there watching." He praised the team's depth under Scaloni, noting "extraordinary players" and a winning mentality that could sustain Argentina even without him on the pitch.

The uncertainty adds intrigue to Argentina's title defense, drawn into Group J alongside Algeria, Austria, and Jordan. The Albiceleste open on June 16 in either Kansas City or Santa Clara, facing familiar foes after their shock 2022 loss to Saudi Arabia en route to the final. Scaloni downplayed the group as "difficult" but focused on preparation, including acclimating to North American conditions after recent Club World Cup experiences.

While Messi's absence would stun the football world—potentially denying fans a Ronaldo-Messi quarterfinal if Portugal tops Group K—Scaloni remains pragmatic. "Whatever he decides will be fine," he affirmed, prioritizing the icon's well-being over sentiment. As qualifiers wrap and training camps loom, Messi's final call could redefine Argentina's golden era.

The expanded 48-team format, kicking off June 11 with Mexico vs. South Africa at Azteca Stadium, promises unprecedented drama, but all eyes will be on whether the GOAT graces it one last time.
