Meloni Eyes Nobel Peace Prize Nomination for Trump If He Ends Ukraine War

Italian PM expresses hope to nominate Donald Trump for the prestigious award upon achieving lasting peace in Ukraine.

Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni voiced strong support for US President Donald Trump on Friday, stating she hopes to nominate him for the Nobel Peace Prize if he successfully brokers a just and lasting resolution to the conflict in Ukraine. Speaking at a press conference following talks with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, Meloni highlighted her cordial relationship with Trump and her belief in his potential to make a decisive difference in ending the war.

“I hope that one day we can award a Nobel Peace Prize to Donald Trump,” Meloni said, adding that she trusts his leadership could deliver peace for Ukraine. The comments come amid Trump’s repeated public frustration over not receiving the Nobel Peace Prize in the past, including a recent message to Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Store where he suggested that without the award, he felt less constrained in pursuing his agenda.

Meloni’s remarks follow Trump’s unveiling on Thursday of his “Board of Peace,” an initiative originally focused on overseeing a Gaza truce and reconstruction but now expanded to address various global conflicts. Italy has received an invitation to join the board, with Trump serving as chairman, US representative, and head of its executive committee. However, Meloni noted constitutional hurdles preventing Italy from participating in an organization led solely by a foreign leader.

She revealed she had urged Trump to revise the framework to accommodate the participation of Italy and other European nations. “The presence of countries like ours can make a difference,” Meloni emphasized, stressing the value of broader international involvement in such efforts. While Italy faces legal constraints, she expressed willingness to contribute constructively to peace initiatives.

The exchange underscores the close ties between Meloni and Trump, as well as ongoing European interest in supporting diplomatic solutions to major conflicts like the war in Ukraine. Meloni’s conditional endorsement of a Nobel nomination ties directly to tangible progress on the geopolitical front.
