Meghalaya NPP Praises Conrad Sangma For Opposing Uranium Mining
NPP backs Conrad Sangma’s anti-uranium position in Meghalaya.
The National People’s Party (NPP) on Thursday praised Meghalaya Chief Minister and party national president Conrad K. Sangma for the state government’s firm position against uranium mining and felicitated newly elected Rajya Sabha member James P. K. Sangma at a function in Tura.
The programme was attended by senior NPP leaders, party representatives and members of the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC). During the event, party leaders highlighted the Meghalaya Assembly’s resolution opposing uranium mining, describing it as an important step towards protecting the state’s environment, natural resources and the interests of its people.
The NPP leadership also highlighted Conrad Sangma’s position on the contentious issue, noting that the state government had maintained a clear stand in response to concerns raised by communities across Meghalaya. The party’s support comes amid longstanding opposition to uranium mining proposals in the state, with environmental protection and community concerns remaining central to the debate.
The Chief Minister was also felicitated for amending rules to facilitate the introduction of a separate electoral roll for the GHADC. NPP leaders described the move as significant for strengthening the functioning of the autonomous district council and improving its electoral administration.
GHADC Chief Executive Member Dhormonath Sangma, Deputy Chief Executive Member Stevie Marak, Executive Members and other members of the district council were also felicitated during the programme. The council leadership was recognised for administrative reforms, including the introduction of a separate electoral roll, digitisation of tax collection and trading licence issuance, and implementation of Service Rules in the GHADC.
The NPP highlighted these measures as steps towards improving transparency, efficiency and accountability in the functioning of the autonomous council. The felicitation programme also underscored the party’s focus on strengthening autonomous institutions, improving governance and addressing issues concerning Meghalaya’s environment, natural resources and local communities.
